Soul on Fire

Elmhurst District 205 is proud to share that one of our own students is headed to the big screen this fall.

James McCracken, a 6th grade student at Churchville Middle School, will make his feature film debut in Soul on Fire, a Sony Pictures production set to open in theaters nationwide on October 10, 2025. James plays the role of Young John O’Leary, bringing to life the childhood story of O’Leary’s remarkable journey after surviving a devastating fire. The film is based on O’Leary’s best-selling memoir On Fire, which has inspired readers worldwide with its message of resilience, hope, and the power of community.

James first stepped into the role while still in elementary school, spending five weeks on location in St. Louis during 4th grade to complete filming. The opportunity gave him a unique window into the world of professional acting, from long days on set to working alongside cast and crew to tell a true and deeply moving story.

Now a middle schooler, James is excited to see the story come to life on the big screen and to share this milestone with his family, friends, and the Elmhurst community.

District 205 celebrates James not only for his talent on screen but also for the dedication and balance it takes to pursue professional acting while continuing his education. His story is a reminder that our students can thrive in many different arenas — on stage, on the field, in the classroom, and even on the movie screen.

Congratulations to James on this extraordinary accomplishment. We look forward to cheering him on when Soul on Fire arrives in theaters this October.

Join us at the York Theater on October 9 at 6:30 p.m. or October 13 at 2:00 p.m. for a special showing of Soul on Fire and meet James in person.
