Dear Jackson Families,
I would like to express my continued gratitude to our entire Jackson community for your support of our teachers and your children as we transition back to remote learning. We know that we are asking for incredible flexibility as we keep our community safe and healthy. In remote learning, our teachers strive to continue to provide meaningful learning and social opportunities for our students.
4th Grade Instrumental Music
If you have a student in fourth grade and are interested in participating in Band or Orchestra this year, please see here for more information.
Standards Based Reporting and Instructional Time
In order to provide additional class time devoted to grade-level reading, we plan to reassign the 30 minute science and social studies block as additional reading or math time. We are not cutting science and social studies out completely; we are just making the necessary time for our relentless focus on every student achieving grade-level reading skills - the learning skills that empower students for their entire lives. To adjust, we will continue to enhance our reading and writing blocks with science and social studies content and students will still encounter science and social studies in ELA and Math.
Our D205 Mission is to accelerate learning for all students. We believe that:
- ALL students must learn and grow
- We accept shared responsibility for student growth
- We make decisions based on what is best for students
- We are a future-focused community of learners
Our reading curriculum integrates significant time for science and social studies content. Students are reading about these topics on a consistent basis in their K-5 classrooms as part of the common curriculum and among the individual book choices students make. In order to provide additional class time devoted to grade-level reading, we must reassign the 30 minute science and social studies block as additional reading/writing/math time. We will not report on science and social studies achievement on the standards-based report card at the elementary level during any grading period this year.
Come out and support Jackson School through the Jackson PTA Trek-A-Thon. Bike, run and/or walk to earn miles towards your trek, which runs October 24th through November 7th. Ask your family and friends to donate per mile or through a flat donation to help with future classroom funding. Click here to register!
The theme this year is "I Matter Because . . ." and the deadline for entries is Wednesday, November 18th and all entries will be submitted electronically this year. Please check the PTA website for all the details! Any questions can be directed to Janice Castillo at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Parent Survey on Hybrid and Remote Learning
Over the past few weeks, D205 has worked to serve family preferences for learning environments and continuously improve the teaching and learning taking place. The purpose of this survey is to seek parent feedback on current remote and hybrid learning experiences. This survey opportunity will close TODAY at 5:00 p.m.
In order to make this information as actionable as possible, parents are intentionally asked to participate in this survey via a PowerSchool form, which allows for the alignment of responses to student information. This approach helps better identify any differences in responses by learning group (hybrid/remote), school, grade level, and other factors.
This information will remain confidential and will help identify supports and successful practices. If you are a parent/guardian with more than one student in the district, you may complete a separate survey for each student or submit the same response for all students.
Thank you for your partnership and continued input.
How to respond:
Go to the PowerSchool Parent Portal at: https://aps.elmhurst205.org/public
If you do not have an account, contact your child’s school. If you forgot your username or password, click the “Forgot Username or Password?” link
At the top of the Parent Portal, you will see tabs for each child in your account
Click on the child’s name about whom you are responding

42nd Annual UCCA Virtual Holiday Food Drive - Oct. 26–Dec. 1
For more than 40 years, the Elmhurst community has participated in the UCCA Holiday Food Drive to help Elmhurst District 205 school children and their families. This year will look a little different but the need is still great, if not greater, than ever. The goal is to help almost 100 more families than last year.
To ensure everyone’s safety, the collection effort is moving online. Instead of bringing food donations to school, you can go online and donate to sponsor a holiday meal, a box of food or more. It’s quick and easy. Go to www.ucca-elmhurst.org/ucca-volunteers or scan the QR code on the flyers.
Please give today to help struggling families put food on the table during these unprecedented times. Gifts of any amount are appreciated. You may also drop off Jewel and Marianos gift cards at the Elmhurst YMCA and the Elmhurst Public Library.
- Holiday Meal Box - $16. Provide a complete holiday meal with turkey, potatoes, green beans and more.
- Box of Food - $30. Provide a box of food filled with pantry staples.

Communication for COVID-19 Cases
When a student or staff member tests positive for COVID, we follow a very detailed process that includes fact-finding, contact tracing, and close work with the IDPH. Click here to access a summary of the process and recommendations. This is to determine whether anyone falls into the category of close contact vs. non-close contact. As per the IDPH, the definition of a close contact is the following:
Anyone (with or without a face covering) who was within 6 feet of a confirmed case of COVID-19 (with or without a face covering), for a cumulative period of at least 15 minutes over the course of 48 hours. Additionally, a close contact could be a person who had physical contact or had contact with the bodily fluids of a COVID-positive individual.
The period of close contact begins 2 calendar days before the onset of symptoms (for a symptomatic person) or 2 calendar days before the positive sample was obtained (for an asymptomatic person).
If the person was symptomatic (e.g., coughing, sneezing), people with briefer periods of exposure may also be considered close contacts.
Anyone who is considered a close contact or non-close contact will receive a letter with instructions from Mrs. Trendel. The decision whether a person is close contact or non-close contact as well as next steps is made by our certified nurses in collaboration with the IDPH. We will only be notifying families of students who fall into the category of close contact or non-close contact. A schoolwide announcement will not be made every time someone tests positive for COVID.
